Getting Started

Ten minutes now makes HELP far more useful when you need it. Do these steps on a calm day.

  1. 1

Open HELP and add it to your home screen. On Android, open the menu and tap Add to Home screen or Install app. On iPhone, tap the Share button and choose Add to Home Screen. HELP then opens like any other app and keeps working without signal.

  2. 2

Fill in My information. Your name, phone, home address, the people to message, and any health notes.

  3. 3

Tap "I'm at home: use my current location" while you are at home, so wellness checks reach you when your home area is affected.

  4. 4

Turn on Wellness checks and privacy. Choose which of the three options you want and tap Join HELP.

  5. 5

Tap "Turn on alerts on this phone" and allow notifications, so "Are you OK?" checks reach you quickly.

  6. 6

Allow location when your phone asks. HELP uses it to find nearby help and to tell responders where you are.

  7. 7

Practice. Tick Test offline mode on the Command Center to see what HELP shows with no signal. Untick it when you're done.

Who should set it up

Anyone in the household with a phone. For kūpuna or anyone who may need help, a family member can sit with them and set it up together, including the voice-and-text interview, which reads each question aloud.

HELP is not an emergency service and does not contact 911. If your life is in danger, call 911.
